Understanding Comments on Your WordPress Blog Website

WordPress comments are one of the most valuable features that allow your website or blog to become more interactive.
By enabling a comment section, visitors can share their thoughts, ask questions, or engage in meaningful discussions with you and other readers.
This not only helps improve user engagement but also builds a strong community around your content. However, managing WordPress comments properly is essential to avoid spam, maintain the quality of conversations, and ensure a positive user experience.

Comments on a wordpress blog are written reactions that readers can add to your blog posts. Leaving comments on blog posts is an easy way for your visitors to communicate with you and other readers.
Additionally, comments typically appear on your site immediately after the blog post content is published, along with the name of the commenter, the date, and the time they left the comment.
A lively comment section can be a great way for you and your readers to build a community around your blog. Visitors can provide feedback, ask questions, and share their perspectives on the topics you discuss.
WordPress posts, pages, and other post types can receive comments if you allow them. However, it’s up to you to engage users on your website and encourage them to leave comments.

All comments on a WordPress site are displayed on the Comments page in the WordPress admin area. By default, this shows all comments.

You can switch the view to see Pending, Approved, Spam, and Trash comments:

- Pending comments have been submitted by visitors, but they will not appear on your blog post unless you approve them.
- Approved comments are published and publicly visible on your blog post for all site visitors.
- Spam comments are flagged as potentially unwanted or irrelevant, and are not visible to your site visitors.
- Trash comments are flagged as unwanted and will automatically be permanently deleted after 30 days.
Hovering your mouse over a comment will display action links for that comment. You can approve the comment to make it visible to all your site visitors, or unapprove it to place it in a pending status.
You can also reply to comments. By replying to a specific comment, your response will appear directly below that comment. This is called “threaded” or “nested” comments.
Additionally, you can choose to edit anyone’s comments on your site. The Quick Edit option opens a text area so you can edit the comment without reloading the page. The Edit option, on the other hand, gives you more options to edit the user’s name, email, and more.

If you see a comment marked as spam but it is a legitimate comment, you can mark it as “Not Spam” by hovering over the comment.
Comments in the trash are comments you have deleted. Any comment in the trash can be restored by clicking Restore. Comments in the trash will remain for 30 days before WordPress automatically deletes them permanently.
The WordPress comment system comes with several options that you can configure from the Settings » Discussion page.
The first part of these options is for default article settings. These settings apply to all your posts, pages, attachments, and custom post types.

Checking “Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article” will send a trackback or pingback to articles you’ve linked to in your post.
This feature allows you to notify other blog owners that you have linked to their article.
If the web page you’ve linked to uses a pingback-enabled system like WordPress, the site owner will see a notification with a link to your article.
The site owner can then choose to display your trackback in their website’s comments section.
Similarly, you can also enable your WordPress site to receive pingbacks from other sites by checking “Allow link notifications from other blogs.”
You will see pingbacks from other sites in your Comments screen. You will also see pingbacks when you link to one of your articles in a new post.
Not every WordPress site needs to have comments enabled. You can disable them by unchecking the box next to “Allow people to post comments on new articles.”
Disabling comments will not remove previously published comments on your site. It will only stop new comments from being accepted. You can also re-enable comments whenever you want.
Comment Moderation is a feature in WordPress that allows website owners to approve or delete comments posted by visitors on their site. Comment moderation settings can be changed from the Settings » Discussion screen.
To enable moderation, open Settings » Discussion and check the option “Comment must be manually approved.”

Comment moderation allows website owners to prevent potentially harmful or spam content from being published on their site.
Using comment moderation along with spam protection plugins like Akismet can significantly reduce the chances of spam comments being published.
If you want, you can allow only registered users to comment on your site. First, you need to open your WordPress site for registration.
Then, go to Settings » General and check the box next to “Anyone can register.”
If you don’t want new users to write posts on your site, make sure you set the Subscriber role as the default role for new users before saving the changes.

After opening your site for registration, go back to the Settings » Discussion screen. In the ‘Other comment settings’ section, check the box next to “Users must be registered and logged in to comment.”

From the Settings » Discussion page, you can also configure options to receive email notifications whenever someone leaves a comment on your site or when a comment is waiting for approval.
Checking this option will also send you email notifications when a site sends you a trackback or pingback.
However, you will not receive any email notifications for comments or trackbacks marked as spam.

If you’re not receiving email notifications after checking this box, check the email address on the Settings » General page to make sure it’s correct. If the email address is correct, check your email’s spam folder.
Next, you can change the default comment settings for articles by enabling or disabling comments on a single post, page, or custom post type.
When editing a post, simply uncheck the box to disable comments and trackbacks, or check it to enable comments and trackbacks.
